The Good Stuff
To be honest, HostMonster is NOT the cheapest package around. Pegged at just less than $5 a month, it is very affordable but not the most affordable in the block. But what they lack in price, they make up for:
In-house customer support staff for faster transactions of trouble tickets and inquiries
Lots of marketing credits for Google, Facebook and Bing
Support for WordPress and shopping carts
Use of cPanel for control panel, great for those already familiar with it
Unlimited email accounts support
Free domain with every sign up
There are a lot of freebies and perks but just keep in mind – do you need these in your site?
The Bad Stuff
Now on to the bad stuff. What are the things that you should know about HostMonster? What are their limitations?
You can’t find enterprise-level support here, both in their actual packages and in after-sales support. Don’t expect too much knowledge from their staff, although they are pretty good in covering the basics.
The free domain only covers your first year with them. After that, you need to renew and pay for it yourself.
Operates on Linux. You don’t have a choice when it comes to the operating system.
No load balancers here and no dynamic, co-located servers. It is really just a shared platform.
The Hosting Package
What is in every HostMonster package? You have:
Multimedia support such as support for Flash, your own MIME types and Shockwave
Support for streaming of audio and video files
Submission to search engine directories
The ability to customize your apache web server (now this is an uncommon feature at this level)
Your 24/7 customer support team
Custom cron kobs
Customized error pages
Unlimited hosting space
Unlimited hosted domains
Unlimited data traffic
You get all these for just $4.95 per month while on a promo. But if you get it on a regular rate, its $6.95 per month. Don’t worry – there are no hidden ballooning of fees here.
The Features and Specifications
Apart from the features above, you will get:
Support for POP3 and IMAP mails
Support for Drupal and Joomla
Additional project management tools
Support for Ruby on Rails
The Ease of Use
HostMonster is quite easy to use especially with the lots of tools (mostly drag and drop) that will allow you to create your site in minutes. Even a first time user will find it not too difficult to navigate and you can get your act together in a few minutes.
The Customer Support
You get fast customer support replies with quite meaty answers so this is one of the best things about them. Just remember that their target is the beginners to small businesses so enterprise level questions are out of the scenario.
Good value for your money, not the cheapest but packs a lot of punch.
